We have an 08 escape, 2 fwd 3l, auto. It has been a good car, but its had its problems. One of the main problems is rust on the hatch. It seems to be rusting out along the seam on the bottom of the inside of the hatch. We took it in once and they said they that it is most likely not going to be covered under the rust warranty.

Has anyone else had this problem? If so how did you get them to fix it, because this is unacceptable with for a 4 yr old vehicle

Well I don't have that problem with my '10, but (and my wife will confirm this) I am friggin obsessive about keeping it washed when they salt.

I have an 06, and it has a spot about the size of a quarter on the hood where the paint bubbled, then flaked off. It has a major cancer spot there. It's almost like they painted right over the rust from the factory. I was at Costco over the weekend and saw a newer Explorer that had the same thing. The one thing they had in common was the silver color, which just may be a coincidence.

I need to POR-15 it, and just touch it up. I'm not keeping it for forever, so a patch job will do the trick for now.

EDIT: Just thought I'd add that it is really a great little ride. I love that thing. I have replaced a couple of unnecessary parts like the wheel bearing that turned out to be a tire making the noise. It has around 115K on it now, and runs perfect.

I try to make sure to wash it often due to the amount of salt we use here.

It seems this rust spot is common on the 2nd Gen escapes. I will take some pics if they don't fix it and post them.

We are also experiencing some weird tyranny shifting when its cold. It will shift a but hard from 1st to 2nd and have a weird little flare between 2nd and 3rd, but seems to go away when the weather is warm.

That is a common issue with the CD4E, one that I am currently pissing around with at work on a customer's car. It appears there is a faulty weld in a great many Direct/Coast/Forward clutch drums. It causes a 2-3 shift flare.

Hmm maybe I should mention that to the guy at the dealer. Problem is we dropped it the last night and it was 70* today :annoyed:

He will probably already know about it, but if you want to feel really smart you can talk about SSM 21250 and the problems with the welds cracking on the 7G120 drum.

I don't know about the Escapes but they had a problem with the bottom door seams on trucks for awhile.

IIRC the TSB was to spread the seam apart, sandblast, treat with some anti-rust stuff, recrimp, seal and repaint.

By the time it got to the outside of the door you are basically screwed.

If you can get a pin through the rust it is a through hole and should be covered by warrenty.

We thought about messing with it so it would have a hole so they would fix it. The 5 yr rust warranty is still good till like July of next year so its got some time to fester :D

I just hope the tranny acts up at some point while they have it, i would hate to get it back and it start to do it.

This is usually caused by high line pressure. The pressure regulator valve/bore are usually bad in this instance. I have a technical data sheet on it if you're interested.

Well they said they wont fix the rust becuase there is no hole. The guy at the dealership suggested we call up ford and pitch a fit lol. Also it is cold today so i told them to take another look at the tranny.

It sounds like everyone is getting the weird weather. It was 65 on Monday and I got 7-8 inches of snow last night.

Well we called ford a number of times and they are going to pay for it :icon_confused:

They are going to fix the rust on the hatch, a spot on the rear passenger wheel well, as well as some defective paint job on both the front and rear bumper all for $350 :yahoo:

Here is a link to a thread on an escape forum with a pic of the hatch rust on someone elses escape, it is in the first post.

All they're probably going to do is clean it up and repaint, if you're lucky they will put seam sealer on it. Won't necessarily fix the problem but will make it look good for a few more years. Its innevitable for seams to rust like that, moisture gets into the bottom of the panel and just sits there, there really isn't any coating on the metal in there because its impossible for it to get between the panels, you'll see seams rust on every single vehicle in existence, some usually last longer than others though.

I think that is all they did to my F-150, I didn't try it under warrenty though.

I thought they were going to fix it, they said they were going to do the afore mention operation.

If they were just going to sandblast it, slather putty on it and repaint it I wish they would have spoken up... I could have done that. That was the first dealership my brother worked at, I had his current one look at it and that is what they said the first shop did.

I haven't decided what to do, I hate other people dinking with my crap... especially when they don't do what they say they are going to do. :temper:
