Can anyone tell me where in the heck I can find an engine wire harness for my 2.9l automatic transmission in my 1988 ford ranger? I've been searching for months trying to find someone that has a good one. Internet and junk yards nobody has one!

I've never seen a transmission harness made aftermarket for these - seeing how the engine has umpteen connections and the trans is like what 3... computer, neutral safety switch, reverse indicator... 4 if you count the speedo wires right next to the mechanical cable. Can you just get the right connector from partsgeek/rockauto/amazon and splice it back if you have a missing connector? Or is there something bigger going on like a manual to automatic swap and you have a mess of changes to make?

Scratch all that, I misread - saw transmission harness somehow.. so a complete engine harness.. If you weren't in PA, I could point ya to a dozen different junkyards :(

Ya, I was editing my post the same time as your reply... I found this thread:

Which basically says nobody is making them, might find a NOS one on ebay (god knows how much they will want for it).
car-part.com might be a way to skip the junkyard...
I found several that are only kinda half misleading as to if they are compatible or not.... read the listing closely, check the vin code for correct engine, etc.

as you can see telling the form EXPLICITLY to search for 2.9L auto 83-92, it returns all kinds of 2.0 MT (which MT is short for Manual Trans)... etc etc - read carefully.

That was page 2 of 3 pages... page 1 was all $$$, and page 3 is all $Call... you might find ones I missed by using different terms - but at the least browse through the other pages and see if they are in your price range.

I’ve got one out of a 90 Bronco 11. Not sure it’s the same ?

FWIW, the haynes manual does not show any differences in the schematic for the ENGINE between B2 and Ranger.

1990+ has Daytime Running Lights (since Canada required starting in '90 and it was one harness for all of north america - Canada and US) and there was a number of changes made to the chassis harness and of course accessories (cruise, etc) would be big differences, but in the engine itself haynes only has one drawing for 2.8 and 2.9 - and that is one drawing for ALL 2.8L and 2.9L 1983-1992.

The Chilton manual is a mess (duplicates and missing engine sizes), but every engine drawing says "Ranger/Bronco II [engine size]" so I would bet the harness is the same between Ranger and B2 at least in the same years.

Those Chilton manuals gloss over a whole lot small things. Especially in the wiring. I had 3 of them out doing the 4.0 swap wiring and still had to use lots of online resources.

So… I’m gonna put a damper on everything here when I say that you’re going to need a 1987 or 1988 harness most likely. A Bronco II harness should be pretty much the same for that vintage. You may be able to use an 85/86 harness, but those motors had EGR, if I remember correctly. 1989-1992 used an entirely different harness.

Now, that said, I can keep my eyes open for one. I also have a couple questions…

What’s wrong with your current harness that makes it not useable?

Where in PA are you? Worse comes to worse, I could possibly rebuild the harness. It would not be a quick thing but I’ve repaired damaged harnesses before. I’m going to either have to find a spare harness or rebuild the one for my Choptop at some point, it’s starting to show it’s age and how many motors it’s been on, lol.
