I have a 88’ 2wd with a 2.9 and A4ld I was wondering is it possible to pull both out of the truck together? Sorry if there is another post on this but I googled and didn’t see it.

Thanks in advance

James

2WD will be pretty tight.

My 4wd was plenty tight. Bodylift helped a lot. Getting it tipped up between the radius arm crossmember and the firewall was tough.

Be prepared for copious amounts of fluid to pour out of the rear of the trans. :fie:

Definitely drain both the engine and transmission; the engine for weight, the transmission because it's coming out if you don't.

Though it is a few more bolts and the transmission cross member, I prefer to take them out together. I despise fiddling with aligning the transmission to the engine while installed. There is also the issue of reaching) torquing the transmission to engine fasteners...Oye.

Taking them out, I'm 33/33/33 between together, separated and lifting the cab off..

Installing them back in 62/5/33 for same together vs separated vs lowering the cab back on; the 5% separated was for a manual - which at the time, I could lift by myself...

Possible? Yes. It will, however, present it’s own challenges.

Pulling the core support helps significantly, but these trucks have that welded in from the factory. When I’ve had to replace them due to rust or damage, I make them bolt in. Makes things easier the next time I’m in there.

I would cut the top of the core support above the rad. Then use some 16G sheet and patch it back in using bolts or sheet metal screws. I've drilled out the spot welds before too and used sheet metal.screws to put it back together.

I agree I have had my engine out at least twice our indeed!

I may consider this, at least I know it can be done but not without a challenge. Thank you all.

I drill out the spot welds and replace them with 1/4-20 x 5/8” long button head bolts with washers and serrated flange nuts. Makes it simple

As a former professional mechanic, I prefer to take the engine out by itself. Less chance for damaging the transmission and less things to get blamed for if the transmission had problems before you touched it.
