stock, may get leveling springs in front "somday"
Tire Size
235
Have any of you taken the whole setup ou and in that way? Yes it's heavy and yes we have a engine lift.

It has been done. It is generally a method reserved for 2wd units. The T-case makes clearing the engine bay difficult, but not impossible.

trucks being a bit higher than cars, does your lift go high enough?
keep in mind the engine tranny combo will need tilted, the front of he engine may come up enough to hit the beam.

for sure the T-case would be off. and the old coming out the auto trans will be gone. But it is much nicer of course to assemble the engine and trans outside the truck before re-insertion. I'm sure we will manage, He has a engine crane but it's larger then most I've seen.
Thanks all!

Yes, have done a few RWD cars that way, as said above, never tried 4WD that way.

Yes, have run out of lift on the hoist, when you lift the engine/trans weight off the suspension then vehicle springs extend all the way up and........... , but "if you can't raise the bridge, then lower the river", took off front tires and lowered front end down, just cleared that time

There is another way...remove the cab...the engine and transmission just drop right in and allow you to pretty much customize every thing without having to crawl, reach or otherwise extend or twist body parts that tend to over react when put through such rigorous motions...

I've done it twice...so I know it is actually not that hard and opens up another option...cleaning and treating the underside of the cab so you won't have to do this all again so soon...

Six bolts...release the steering and parking brake and disconnect the wiring harness....

Except for maybe having to replace the body mounts and hardware it is relatively low cost

Same with the bed If I"m not mistaken? I don't know.. I may get a strange look suggesting that. but I like the Idea Mark!

I've not looked where/how did ford use and locate harness plugs GMs are sticky with some sort of sealer. yuck

Pull the t-case and have a good sized pan ready for the tidal wave of tranny fluid when she starts going uphill.

I seriously doubt it will work with the t-case intact. Getting the angle was hard enough with just the A4LD, pulling tires or a bigger hoist won't help the transmission get over the radius arm crossmember and the engine get over the radiator support at the same time any easier. The funky offset heavy t-case sure won't make anything easier.

My short C5 with a 302 went in easier than the A4LD with the 2.8 came out, I let the air out of the tires. 235/75-15's. 3" bodylift also helped make the hole bigger. A third gen may have a slightly larger engine bay than mine, I doubt it would be much bigger though.

@85 Wow and with the crossover pipe :) I'm pretty sure we will drop the a4ld pan and it. I'm pretty sure the new engine with M5od and no Tcase will go back in. LOL
@Mark, I mentioned taking the cab off Hank actually said "yeah we could do that" lol

This sounds like a fun project. be sure to take lots of pictures and show us the progress on it.

@97 Yes, I plan to take photos of stuff everyone takes for granted also.
Surely everyone's seen this? 98, 62,000 on the od

On my 96 the rear lights/fuel connector plugs in just below the driver seat...literally...and they do not have any sealers on them...just a push pull connector...push in the tab, pull the wires apart. Under the hood they are bolted together...just a 10mm center bolt and they pull apart...no sealers or gunk...

Just cover the open connectors over as you probably would do anyway...keeps the dirt out...

Not exactly sure with the 93, but 96/97/98 and maybe later years all had the three connectors...very easy to detach too from the engine without disturbing coil wires...may need to disconnect the relay for starter and all that too...but just by looking you will see what needs to be detached...

Crossover pipe is still on it pending autopsy almost 5 years later... :icon_twisted:

Converting trans to 4wd or truck to 2wd?
