engine/trans swap from van

Have a '93 that had a bad auto trans and worn out motor. Picked up a 3.0 and trans that came out of a '93 van with low miles. The old trans had gear drive speedo and the replacement does not. Can I swap the tail of the old to the other and be able to use the speedo cable? Any other problems we might run into?
This has been a good project for my son and I. Hoping to do something in the future a little more exciting than this, but it's a good start for us.
