Ranger is a 4.0 XLT Ext Cab 5 speed. 150K Miles. Motor and trans. mounts check ok. Cooling fan has contacted shroud enough to break blades. Torque damper is rusted out. Ford and Mazda have discontinuted the part. Ford P/N FOTZ 6F085A. Mazda P/N ZZLO-39-03X. Any info. appreciated. Aftermarket?

Thanks,
Bob

Are you sure its the torque damper? Mine is blown as well...rusty and oil leaking, and ive never hit my shroud.

the fan might have already been cracked and finally let loose. very common

Check rockauto.com or lmctruck.com. They have lots of oddball parts listed, especially LMC.

The torque damper is just that, a torque damper. It doesnt hold the engine in place, Its just a shock absorber. The motor mount and trans mount hold the engine in place. If the engine shifted enough to hit the fan shroud, its the motor mounts. I would also check the rad support, see if it rusted out and if its the rad that moved.

Hi: I'm not totally sure it's the torque damper. I just bought this truck. It has turned out to be a time and money pit. I just replaced the clutch with a Centerforce dual friction, and whle the drive train was down and re-sealed we checked all 3 mounts. Seemed totally OK. With that much invested in it so far, it seems the damper is there for a reason. Ingalls Engineering makes a Stiffy, tuner car universal damper that could be adapted. Maybe the radiator support has sagged? Thanks for the response Bob

Also check the front body mounts. If the frame rusted enough for the body mounts to fall through, it would allow the rad and fan to sit lower.

Oh, if you're talking about that small shock absorber looking thing between the engine and the frame, don't worry about it. It didn't come on all 4.0 models and some people have removed it with no problems.

Thanks. I'm gonna check those mounts and the frame i that area.

Thanks. That's probably why both Ford and Mazda old man parts guys never had any call for that little shock thing. It wasn't really necessary, or even put on all 4.0's.

sfwjesse I think i got other issues, like a rusty or bent radiator support. Thanks
