That steel spacer thats the same shape as the tranny bellhousing, is it necessary? And if so how come I cant get the stupid thing to go in? It slides right up in there until theres about an inch still sticking out the bottom and then it wont go up any further...

I'd put it in. It's prolly not 100% necessary, but it helps to get the starter placed properly and keep dirt and crap out of the clutch.

As for why it won't go in the whole way.... do you have the flywheel on already? If so, take it back off. It stops it just about an inch from being fully in place. You can put a bolt or two in the holes to hold it for a few seconds while you get the flywheel back on.

I never took the flywheel off, when I removed the tranny it just sort of fell half way out so I yanked it off and set it in the truck bed. Fast forward a month to the new tranny going in and now it doesnt want to fit back in the way it came out...grrrr why does my truck have to be the one with all the problems lol

But thanks for the advice kind sir

I take it you have a manual?

There are two dowels, one on each side of the engine block, you have to tap the shield up and it will click into place, the tops of the holes on the manual shield are open so it can slide onto the dowels. On the automatics, the holes are actual holes and you have to remove the flywheel to install and remove the shield.
