I finally found a 4 liter in a 1993 Ford Explorer that want to put it in my 1989 Ranger that has a 2.9 liter. The problem is that the Explorer has an automatic trans in it.
I recently rebuild my manual trans and transfer case so I want to keep my original 5 speed trans and transfer case. Can I use my original trans and transfer case with the 4 liter if I replace the my clutch with a 4 liter manual trans clutch?

The motor will bolt up yes, if you have a FM series tranny, it may not last long, if you have M5OD then it'll be better. (FM has a pan on the bottom, M5OD does not.)
If you use a 4 liter clutch and flywheel, you'll need a 4 liter manual starter, if you use your 2.9 clutch and flywheel, which is not not reccomended as it may not last long(Although i used this setup for almost a year with no failures) you can use the 4 liter auto starter
Just my .02

Can you get the entire vehicle?

Cause you'll need the entire engine harness, computer, sensors etc. I am sure you have read over this swap if you are attempting it.

I have the entire vehicle. The engine is runs great but the auto trans is slipping.

My truck has the FM series trans. I have an 8.8 rear end with a locker and a dana 35 in the front. I'm also running 33 in. tires and 4.10 gears. What kinds of problems can I expect if I use my trans with the 4 liter? Or should swap out my trans with a 4 liter trans or maybe the auto trans/transfer case from my donor Explorer?

Definatly find a M5OD and put in there. With the setup your running the FM146 will not last that long.

Label everything carefully before starting... You'll need the computer and engine compartment wiring harness from the 4.0 vehicle.

The only thing I'm not sure of (since I'm considering doing the exact same swap you're discussing here (only mine is a 94) is if the computer controls the automatic transmission on those 4.0 liters, and if it will set any codes for such........

I remember another thread on here that stated there is a plate that you'll need to get to use the 4.0 clutch on the fm transmission. I'll see if I can dig it up.

Found it here: http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1494&highlight=clutch+conversion
