I just purchased a 1994 Explorer Limited and it looks to have a cracked block. Im going to start looking at some salvage yards for replacement motors. Can anyone provide a list of compatible engines for an easy swap. This engine is their first generation. Will the second, third or forth generation work ?:icon_cheers:

4.0L OHV (over head valve) from 91 to 98?. You will need to keep the wiring harness and all the sensors that are stock on the engine now.
You may need to change out some parts for your sensors to fit the new engine.
The 4.0L SOHC will bolt to the bell housing (minus 1 bolt), but the rest will require a donor vehicle. Having the donor will eliminate most problems.
You can also install a 5.0L (302 EFI), but again , you have the same problem as with the SOHC. Plus you will need a different transmission.
If it is an issue of getting more power, the 4.0L SOHC puts out about the same HP as the 5.0L, but with less torque.

Thanks Ray I guess since the HP is about the same I'll probly just look around then for a 4.0 to make the switchout easier. Is the SOHC the same as the OHV and what did you meen 1 extra bolt,
Thanks

SOHC = Single Overhead Cam

OHV= Overhead Valve (or pushrod)

They are very similar engines, made from the same basic design but the valve-train components are different. OHVs tend to be more reliable since they have fewer moving parts in the valve train. The overhead cam design allows for a bit more torque owing to better options for valve timing, and so they have an extra hole for bell housing bolts to spread the force around a bit more, thus making the engine block, trans bell, and the bolts live longer and survive better.

For you application, I'd go with the OHV which can be gotten out of any explorer 91-95 and then about half of them from 96-early 99 or many 90- early 2001 rangers.

Where is the crack located? I had a crack in the side water jacket on a 2.0 ford JB welded it held water for 10 years.
