got an 87 ranger 4x4 with good 2.9 is it really worth money and hassle to swat to 4.0

No, not if its running well

2.9l does 140 HP, 4.0l 160 HP

So more power but not that much more, 20 HP

If the 2.9l threw a rod or bottom end started knocking then a 4.0l would probably be a better option that a full rebuild of the 2.9l, but thats users choice really

just a little puddle jumper fishin rig nothin crazy

The 4.0 is a good replacement of yoir 2.9 is toast. They use some of the same parts i think. But if the 2.9 is fine, leave it alone

Run the 2.9l til it cracks a head, then swap a 4.0l in it and run it until it rots away.

I'd keep the 2.9 and put the money I saved into making said 2.9 a lot more fun.

An 87? Probably not worth the headache to swap. I tried years ago in my 88 and it sat half completed until my 89 needed more oomph to turn 35’s. The swap in an 89+ is far more straightforward, so it got the 4.0 and the 2.9 that I pulled went in the 88. There are some improvements that can be made on the 2.9 with minimal effort, which is my plan when I can get back to finishing it (dd’s take priority).

I am really surprised that @PetroleumJunkie412 hasn't come in and set this thread straight yet.... PJ your services are needed :)
