I have a 83 Ranger 4X4 manual with the 4 cyl engine, will the 6 cyl bolt up yo the bell housing or do I have to replace it also?

Which 6 cylinder engine? I would guess no. Bell housings are integral to the transmission, so you're probably going to have to get the appropriate tranny, too. Don't forget to get the wiring looms for both the new engine and (maybe) new tranny.

No, none of Ford's V6 engines will bolt to the bell housing for a 4-cylinder.

Not on his truck. The first RBV transmission with an integral bell was the M5OD, which was not introduced until 1988, and then only on 2wd versions. In 1990 when the 4.0 came out the M5OD was released in a 4x4, mostly on the 4.0, but a rare 2.9 4x4 version was out there, and then in 1993 when the 2.9 went away all the manual transmissions were M5OD.

Thank you to all. Is it hard to swap in a 302 and still keep it a 4X4? Or could I put a 351M in it? I've got all the components for a 4X4 stick.

It can be done.
