i am goint o swap engines in my truck cause i broke the one that is in it. i just replaced the oil pan gasket, valve cover gasket, exhaust gasket, and intake gaskets, can i put those on this motor they were only on the other motor for a week or two before it broke? also what is the proper way to install the intake manifold gasket because i couldnt get it to seal on the motor that broke, it would leak anifreeze a lot.

You can reuse the gaskets, but i would not recommend it. After a gasket has been installed and then removed theres no guarantee that it will seal properly. Besides, gaskets are cheap, so i would definatly just replace them with new. As far as the intake manifold gasket goes, it wouldnt hurt to use RTV silicone sealant. It will seal just as good if not better than a urethane or cork gasket. Just make sure that you get high temp RTV(usually red).

What motors did you change? There is a little difference in the different years.

i have a 1990 ranger 2.3l and the motor i am putting in is out of an 89 ranger 2.3l. the motors look the same to me, the only difference i noticed between the years is that the intake on the 1990 has an egr and the 89 doesnt, but the blocks are the same, the only difference is the exhaust manifold and the intake. but it should bolt to the block on the 89. is this correct, i know the intake bolts up, and i think the exhaust manifold will too.

are the two blocks the same, can someone tell me. i think they are identical, am i right?

"In ’89 the 2.3 was changed to a DIS (Distributorless Ignition System) ignition utilizing a new 8-plug head. This head had larger evenly spaced D-shaped intake ports and was used until the end of production of the 2.5 in ‘01."

This from the sticky at the top of the forum...I would say they are pretty much identical for those two years...but there may be small diffs in the sensors that were used...so as long as you stick with your original harness and attach all sensors from the original motor you should be good to go...

'89 had EGR, I have an '89 and an early '90, the only differences between the two are the air filter housings and the hose between the air filter housing and the throttle body. In mid '90 they added a MAF sensor, that's about all that changed, they stayed mostly the same until around '93 I think

if you're thinking the intake ducting that goes from the exhaust manifold to the intake under the battery is the EGR, that just means that the previous owner of the '89 removed it...

oh, if you use the wiring from the '90, make sure to use the O2 sensor from it, in early '90 they also switched from a 3 wire to a 4 wire O2 sensor, it caused me a bit of trouble when I tried to change my sensor a couple years ago, the 4th wire is just a ground, but it needs it...

Sounds like either the lower intake manifold has a crack in it that leaks when the cooling system get pressure, or the surface that bolts againt the head is warped, so check that out closely, it is not worth re-using the gaskets, on the intake and exhaust manifolds I smear a little bit of ultra-copper silicone around all the ports on both sides of the gaskets for extra insurance against leaks.

okay my 89 the intake piece that connects between the throttle body and inatake manifold are different. and im talking about the copper looking 1/2 inch pipe coming off the exhaust manifold and going back into that piece i said about and the egr is bolted to it. so i dont know why but the 89 doesnt have the egr and the 90 does have it, but the rest of the intake is the same for both except that one piece.

Some one removed the egr tube, and blocked the egr off.

Some of the 2.3 in the 93-94 years with a auto did not have a EGr setup.I have a couple headers that have a cap on the stock header and a plate on the intake.

yes it was an 89 ranger 4 cylinder 2.3 with an auto tranny and it doesnt have an egr.
