I swapped a 2.5 4cyl 5 speed from a 1999 ranger into a 2004 that had a 4.0 auto..

everything is done and the truck is running and driving I just had some issues i would like to get worked out if possible.. I have both trucks and they were complete just the 99 was smashed and the 04's engine was blown..

#1.. the speedo is not working Im pretty sure the 04 gets signal from the tranny and the 99 from rear diff.. Looks pretty hopeless getting this working.. any ideas?

#2.. Tach is working however its not correct. I think due to the other truck being a v6. any fix here?

any help is appreciated..

Are the gauge clusters the same? If you switch them maybe the tach will work. Back in the day aftermarket tachs had a switch on them to set the number of cylinders.

The old truck didn't have a tach..

On the 99, the tach could select 4 or 6 cyl. with a jumper wire on the cluster. Check for a black/yellow wire, and remove it if you have one connected to your cluster. This is a ground, so don't worry about it touching anything when it is removed.

The speed sensor could be a lot more trouble if it was in the 04 transmission. The 99 sensor is in the rear end, and follows different paths depending on if it had 2 or 4 wheel ABS. It may be that the only way to get the speedo working is to change the rear end and wiring harness. I know that's not what you wanted to hear, but I don't see any easy way.

?? The 04 will still have a VSS on the rear axle for ABS, so there is no need to replace anything at all back there.

I would like to see someone simply splice that transmission VSS/OSS wiring into the rear axle VSS wiring, to see if the pulse rates are the same.

If you find the rear VSS wires are RD/PK and LG/BK, and the Trans OSS wires are DB/YE and GY/RD, splice them together, (RD/PK spliced to DB/YE and LG/BK to GY/RD) and let us know if/how that worked.

To do this splicing, I suggest using those Scotch-locks that pierce the wire when clamped together. That way if it doesn't work you haven't cut any wires.

Yes the ABS VSS might be able to share its signal for use on the speedometer.
You can also get conversion modules, normally used for tire size on electronic VSS systems, to fine tune speedo

Another alternative is Dakota Digital, they make VSS add-on devices, to convert speedo cable to VSS, or any spinning shaft to VSS signal, similar to after market Cruise Controls.

Google: Speedometer 8K Pulse Generator
The 1999 M50D-R1 trans may still have the speedo gear inside, just capped off if the VSS for the ABS was used that year.

The SEN-4165 is the one similar to after market cruise control.

thanks for the info.. Im going to try this when I get an opportunity.. Are sure on the colors for this..? all this wiring is on the 2004.. I'll post if it works or not

I don't know the wire colors for 04, the ones I posted are 2000.

Regardless, we are dealing with two, two wire sensors.
If it doesn't work spliced one way, reverse the wires.
Can't hurt anything.
