Smoke is coming out of my intake, but not so much out of my exhaust, only when you first start it up for the day and it sputters until you drive it around a little bit. What do you think the problem is? I took a video of it if it helps any. Oh, and also my engine shakes like a seizure. I'm going to do a compression check soon to see if i need rings, it was probably a bad idea that i tried to climb a hill while doing 4,000 rpms.

Time to start looking for that 5.0.

Maybe if i had the cash flow, but i would rather throw some performance parts in my 2.3 anyway.

We just had a new member with an 86 2.3 who is planning a 5.0 swap...maybe find out what he is doing with his engine and work something out...I'm sure the 86 and 87 are pretty much the same engine...

As for the smoke...could also be valve seals...if it smokes when you let off the gas between shifts then it is more likely that than rings...maybe throw some heavier oil in it till you can get the rebuild done though...

I'm running 10-w30 so yea maybe i need to run thicker stuff. as for the smoke when i opened the throttle no smoke came out of my intake until i let off the throttle. It doesn't leave a trail of smoke it just does it occasionally mostly during first of the day start ups so im hoping it's just the valve seals but just to double check ill run a compression check. If the compression is okay i'll pull the head off and see the damage. It would probably also help that i put on a valve cover gasket because i lost 2 quarts of oil in a day, and then some in my intake

Compression test should give you an idea...I, for some reason, didn't do that and just swapped the head...but I did the wiggle test...a very scientific method of testing piston wobble where you put your finger on the top of the piston and try to move it back and forth...they all seemed to be tight...no movement at all...

On my 2.0 when I swapped the head I could wiggle all the pistons so I knew the rings were bad but was able to drive it for another year or so before having to swap out the bottom end...

Heavier oil and a catch can might help keep you running for a year or so...
