When you're in there doing the radiator loosen up the distributor clamp bolt about 1/4 of a turn, so it's not loose but not tight, and "bump" the distributor back just a touch. Just a little! Best way is to thump the vacuum advance with your hand - lightly. You are trying to be moving the distributor counter-clockwise about 1/8" from where it is now. Your pinging will be much better after that, but if it's not gone completely then do the same thing again until it's gone. It'll take you 5 minutes to adjust this.
