My 88 ranger 4x4 w/ 2.9 is starting to act up.
After it's gotten warm, more specifically, if i've been sitting in stop and go traffic for a little while, It starts to act weird. When I'm accelerating (and when it gets real bad, just cruising) the truck lurches like I'm driving over bumps in the road, but theres no bumps.
Any idea what this might be? It idles normal, when I watch the tach as it's doing it it doesnt show signs of the rpm's changing, so maybe its actually a tranny or rear end problem?
This problem started out small about 2 months ago, it would only do it in 5th gear if i tried to accelerate without shifting down. Now it does it in pretty much any gear except 1st and 2nd. Today I drove on the freeway in 3rd to see if it still did it (cruising at about 4500 rpm) and it seemed to have gone away. Its hard to tell though, it seems the more the engine is bogged down (Like going up a hill in 4th at 2k) the bigger the "bumps" feel. But cruising in
4th at 45 mph on flat ground, it still does it, they just feel smaller. They're intermittent, kind of randomly every few seconds.
I have no idea when the last ignition tune up was done, I think I'll try to get to that sometime in the next couple days, whether or not it helps I need to do it anyway.
170K+ on the motor, no other mechanical issues in the past since I've had it, Never gotten hot and the last oil change the oil looked great so i dont think my heads are at risk of being cracked.
