I have a '99 Ranger 3.0L FlexFuel with a factory engine block heater (the kind you plug in to 120v to help out in cold weather). The pigtail started arcing last winter, which is an obvious fire hazard. I cut off the end and did my best to solder a new end on, but the strand wire was badly oxydized well up the cord from the end. Has anybody worked on these engine heaters? Would I be best off to try to find a whole new heater or can I get a new pigtail for it? And where can I find any relevant parts to help me repair it. Of course the temp is supposed to be around 0 degrees F the next few nights, so I'm asking now. Sometimes I do my best work under a tight deadline. Other times, procrastination really sucks!

If you can unplug it from the heater just take it to a parts store and try to get a new one.

Just go buy a new block heater cord.

the ones i've dealt with go directly to one of the frost plugs, and has a 2-3 prong connector that unplugs, new cords are in the $20 range from your local untrustworthy parts store (i would go to canadian tire for this part in canada)

the whole deal looks like this, you won't need the center piece though, that's the heater it's self

Make sure you take your current cord with you or at least look at it to make sure you get the right plug.

yes, you could get it out of the jy, but chances are it's not going to be in much better condition than his original one, plus with the value of the part and how important it is where i live, it's worth the extra 20... (my truck won't start without it right now)

and it is a good idea to bring the cord with you, while they are more or less universal, there are several different universal versions
