engine getting HOT.

i have 93 3l v6 2wd, iv noticed that my engine gets really hot while its at idle, once i get moving its fine but if i stop at a long red light i can see the needle moving up, if i get in the line to pick up my sister from school the needle goes alll the way to red. iv heard that the thermostat can get stuck closed or something im not to good with engines any ideas? i know that the fan turns on with the truck.

Sounds like your fan clutch may not be "engaging." The air coming in is adequate to keep it cool when you're moving. If it's as easy to spin with the engine cold as it is when it's warmed up, that is likely the culprit. Might also just give it a visual, make sure it's not leaking anything and that it doesn't seem wobbly.

When the engine is cold take the radiator cap off and make sure it is full of coolant. If it is full then look to the fan clutch and just for insurence I'd install a new 195* thermostat in there.

how hard is it to replace the fan clutch and the thermostat? and how much would it cost to do myself versus paying someone? and should i do a radiator flush? i dont think its ever been done. and i dont even know where any of that stuf is hahahaha but im good with a wrench

For sure hire it out! If you don't even know where them parts are you'll have a time of it!
