1990 bronco II eddie b edition 4x4 2.9 aotomatic trans goin dead when I put in drive idles fine cranks fine willeven run in reverse but just stalls in drive can't even pull forward a couple of feet with out engine dying

Sound like the convertor is locking up when it isn't supposed to.

It stalls in Drive only or also if you put it in 1st or 2nd?

Is this with engine cold or warm?
or does it matter

If you have a tach what is the idle at when engine is warm?
Should be about 750rpm, 900-1,000rpm cold

The IAC(idle air control) valve is how the computer keeps the engine running at idle, it opens a little more when engine is cold to make idle higher, it also opens more when you put it in gear, so idle stays at 750rpm.

Whats the trans fluid level?

You might be able to pull some trouble codes from the OBD I

It does it in 1 2 and drive it was at normal temp. Fluid is level good it runs perfect other than that it will spit and sputter a few times before dying the check egine light goes on and off but doesn't stay on after cranking just in drive

What would cause the converter to lock up when it isn't supposed to

Shorted wiring, bad solenoid, bad valve body gasket, plenty of things.

Some else said the solenoid on the trans might cause it not sure where its located on the trans though

The 1990 should have an A4LD automatic trans.

The torque converter lockup solenoid is call the TCC(torque converter clutch) solenoid, you can test it from the electrical connection located a few inches in front of the shift linkage on the drivers side of the transmission, 25-40 ohms I think.
I believe there are two solenoid connections on the '90, not sure which is the TCC connection, I would think the one closest to the front.
The connection pointed up is the neutral safety switch.

You have to drop the pan to get to this solenoid.

The brake light switch on the brake pedal is used to unlock the torque converter, so check to make sure your brake lights are coming on, if not then get that switch fixed.

That shouldn't matter at a dead stop. IIRC the converter clutch should never be commanded engaged by the computer under 45 MPH.

Pretty sure its the torque converter solenoid, thanks everyone for the help its much appreciated
