Anyone tried one of those cheap style chips for under $100?

if so, howd it work out?

Scam/junk/waste of money.

This has been covered many times.

fig'd it been covered, looked for some info briefly couldn't find any hits.

I seen them advertise on this site, so thought maybe some merit was warranted, guess not.

Thanks

Your best bet would be to start upgrading other things for more power. For example, my truck (same truck as yours mechanically) knocks at WOT. I know I need new plugs/wires, but on another forum it's stickied to replace your stock MAF with a mustang 5.0 MAF. Fixes that issue and you can run full throttle on 87 octane!

Your stock engine should not be pining at WOT no matter what. Try running seafoam through it to clean out carbon build up.

i concur, ive beaten 4.0s like goverment mules and not one that was running right ever pinged unless it was a hundred degrees out

Everything is up to snuff, and the motor has been cleaned out. It's not a Ranger thing, it's an Explorer thing, and generally, a stock 91-92 will do it on a hot day. It's not major, and I can barely hear it, but my other car runs 15lbs of boost - I got an ear for weird noises. My truck also has a slight delay in the motor adding fuel - again, because of the stock setup.

it shouldnt be ANY 4.0 thing. they shouldnt ping, period.

This topic comes up enough... shouldn't it be stickied somewhere?

Maybe not in GD, but down in the engine's section maybe?

It only happens on hot days, and I agree, it should not happen at all. Just the other day I dropped the clutch and fed it gears since I am getting new tires anyways, and it sounded perfect. I never realized how much this thing likes to lace the tires off if you let it.
