i have a 98 ford ranger that at low speeds has a chain slapping noise, then at fifth gear full throttle there is a rattling noise. any ideas

it sounds like a loose heat shield but you never know just crawl under the truck when its cool and try to shake or pull the heat shields and see if any are loose or set the ebrake and fire it up and crawl underneath and listen to see where the sound might be coimg from. if it sounds like a chain slapping noise i dont know what kind of timing belt or chain these trucks have but yotas the tensioners will sometimes come loose and cause the timing chain to rattle around but that is on the 22res on these truck im not sure its just some food for thought

X3 on heat shield......took mine off.
