Empty Transmssion Pan

Dropped the pan and filter last night. Changed filter, put on new gasket, put in 3 quarts of dex/merc (tranny was listed as required dexron vi at oreilly). The transmission wouldnt shift into gears.. Dropped it again repositioned the filterm and put it all together again with another 3 quarts of new fluid. Drove home about 4 miles and everything was fine. Now trying to go to work it isnt shoft at all and the stick is completely dry. No fluid whatsoever on it. No puddle under the truck either. Its a 98 4xr 5r55e..

Um you probably are still low on fluid from the change. Transmissions usually hold 9 quarts at least, and in a drain and fill situation you only get half of it out. The other half is in the torque converter.

A good rule of thumb is to check the level before you change it and if it is not over filled, drain it and measure how much you removed and put that much back in. If a little low top it off as needed.

Do NOT overfill.

A better method would be to take it to a shop that exchanges the fluid via a machine, this way you get all of it changed. Bad part is you don't get the filter changed.

The "book" says that 3 quarts will come out when you drop the pan. But, that can vary a lot. If the converter back-flows fluid, it can take a lot more to refill it (that is why you always check the fluid level with the engine running). The whole thing holds about 9 quarts. Like said above, you should always catch and measure the amount that came out.
