Anyone have a good place to buy electronics components? I am specifically wanting to buy a handful of capacitors to repair a video card...

FZ65 1000 6.3V are on the top... I am assuming that is a 1000 microfarad cap rated at 6.3 volts...

No other markings on the cap.

Thanks!

AJ

I usually get my components from MCM Electronics or Newark Electronics. They both have websites, so google them. I'm uncertain of their web addresses.

ive always salvaged my components, or bought new ones of ebay. 1000uf caps are common, id check out radioshack, altho they cost more, 10/16 volt caps would work also, ive used caps with a higher voltage rating with great sucess on video cards and motherboards

I go to the Shack, Radio Shack that is.

FZ indicates these are Sacon brand, FZ series. Go here:

www.badcaps.net/forum

Some members there have all these databases of datasheets for various manufacturers. They can look up the original specs of these and recommend a high quality replacement. (Sacon FZ are an extremely well known cheap failure prone Chinese capacitor, it is more than likely there are other threads with the exact video card you have that have already been answered you can go by.) Computers use special extremely low ESR caps, radioshack caps are general purpose for simple electronics, not suitable for computers. Digikey carries the correct series from high quality manufacturers but you need to know which series to get. Badcaps.net actually carries the same manufacturers, but most of their series are extremely low ESR as they specialize in computer capacitor replacement.

Repair a video card? I'd just buy another one... But that's me... I usually stay away from repairs to computer electronics, and buy a new part.

This is exactly what I needed!

Thanks, this has some really good info on replacements.

and thanks to all of the other replies, I appreciate it.

My goal here is to not spend a whole lot. the card that I am repairing is a fairly decent card for the computer it is going into. (a bit dated, but I originally paid 70 bucks for it in 2006.) It would be unlikely that I can get another card for under 25 bucks that is the same specs. I can replace all the capacitors on the card for under 10 bucks, maybe under 5.

it is VERY important that you get the EXACT same size cap. If it says 100uF then get that and not a 100 nF cap. That would be a disaster.

These are my favorite places for electronics.

Digikey - huge stock, very heavy in computer parts
Allied Electronics - wide range of stock - resistors, caps, transformers, semiconductors
Newark Electronics - very like Allied
WW Grainger - need a starting cap (or a compressor) for a 1956 Carrier A/C? a fan motor for the exact model of bathroom vent you have?
And of course:
American Science and Surplus - who have absolutely wacky stuff and the funniest catalog you'll ever run across. I got a high power USB microscope here for about $70. Ever since they send me catalogs monthly - I'm currently lusting after a 15" vise grip for $17.50

I am going to go with Mouser electronics for my caps. they have the ones I need instock, and digikey has several that are not instock.

I will have to look at Allied and Newark.

I have an actual paper catalog from Grainger from a few years ago. they do have some good stuff for home electrics.

Have you ever been in an actual American Science and Surplus store? I have been in the one in Milwaukee a few times. cool place to visit.
