Electrical accessory wiring

To PO of my 92 4.0 ext. cab Ranger did a poor job wiring some towing accessories which had led to some electrical issues. I'm going to fix these problems by putting back an original set of battery cables and replace accessory wiring.

Question is about accessory wiring on the Rangers: Are there extra spots in the fuse box to wire in additional circuits rather than wiring everything up to the battery terminals? This would clean up the wiring a lot and put the fuses where they belong rather than hanging next to the battery.

as far as i know, there are no extra spots. you could use a fuse tap if its a fairly low amperage circuit. you can also buy fuse blocks with 4-6 spots in them from the auto parts places. mount it on the inner fender next to the battery and run your stuff. if you need bigger/more fuses, grab a power distribution block out of a 2nd or 3rd gen ranger. they hold the maxi fuses and have probably 10 spots.

It would depend on what options were included when the vehicle was originally purchased.

There are no "extra" places for fuses but there can be unused spaces since that Factory option was not added.

Best thing to do would be to install your own separate "fuse box", then wire from there.

Hit a wrecking yard, lots of small weather resistant(covered) fuse boxes can be found.

Also google: Split Flex Wire Loom

This stuff is cheap and slides over wires, without disconnecting them, to give you a clean "factory look", also protects wires and splices.
Comes in many diameters.

Additional fuse boxes are cool because you can put a run it hot or out a switch in it so you decide when that stuff gets power. My buddy does this with all his off-road stuff.

Plus you can put it on the other side of the truck so you don't have to run that extra several feet.

That is a good idea to run another fuse block on the other side of the engine. I'll see what I can find at the salvage yard this weekend.
