electric winch thought

so ive been off this site for a while and thought id come back for a thought. ive installed a elec. winch, but the manual says "do not keep the winch connecteed when not in use". so that is a PITA. ive got to connect it up to my battery all the time now?? so i was thinking why not hook up the positive cable to a starter solinoid? turn on the soleniod when you need it. turn it off when you dont?? will it hold up? or will it kill it? P.S. im NOT the kind of guy who sits there and reels in 100ft of cable in one shot.

I really dont see how leaven the winch hooked up to a power source constantly is going to hurt it. Ive had my winch for about 3 years and its hooked directly to the battery and my father has had winched on his trucks for the past 20 years hooked directly to the battery with no problems. But If you wanted to go the route of disconnecting it. The starter selonoid direction should hold up.

Those directions were probably referring to the remote cable, as it might be accidentally tripped...

well that is what i thought at first for the remote but then i read it again. and it said dis connect from the battery when not in use so i thought oooookkkkk. i dont see how it could hurt it? but any way i think ill put the solinoid on just to be on the saffe side in case it drains your batery over time or somthing gay like that.

i starter solenoid isnt likely to last long with that kind of amperage for the length of time a winch will be run.

when you go to the parts store, make sure you specify you need a continuous duty solenoid. they make them, they look exactly like a regular starter solenoid, but they are much beefier and are designed to take the heat of continuous operation.

Cole hersee makes this battery disconnect. Similar to Hanzo Steel's idea without the plugs laying around. We use these on all of out fire trucks so they are dependable and can handle the amps.

I would rig up a relay switch kind of deal in the cab. Should be easy to do. Would stay off when you need it you hit switch jump out and hook up.

I used a solinoid for some kc lights like 6 it worked but after about 45min or so it burned up. If you dont leave it on for long it should hold up

its the same as those battery tenders.. It says to disconnect the battery from the vehicle when you put it on.. No one does.. it doesnt hurt anything.
