Need some advice... what is everyone running for electric fans? I don't have enough room to run a mechanical fan, so I'm looking at doing an electric fan setup. I have about 3", maybe less between my pulleys and radiator (I have the Duff 4 core rad) and currently two electric fans, one around 14" aftermarket one and a smaller one from a Chevy pickup. The 14" is in the engine bay as a puller and the Chevy is behind the grille as a pusher. It is still getting pretty warm but might just be air stuck in the cooling system... just want to get some options in case I need to get different fans.

Second question, I am using an NP435 with a bellhousing from an '84 F150, and flywheel and starter from an '82 Bronco. When the engine is running it sounds like there is a bolt rolling around inside the starter... think really loud rattling noise. I think I may just have either a bad starter or simply the wrong starter for the bellhousing... supposedly the '84 took a different starter than the '82.

Thoughts?

for fans, I'm using two ten inchers, set on opposite corners of the stock rad. I searched ebay for the thinnest possible fans to fit.

With a 180deg thermostat, my truck runs too cool, around 160deg.

Ahh Teddy strikes again.......LOL.
Teddy lives where it dont get very hot out and so his two 10 inchers work just great. Here in Phoenix, AZ those two 10 inchers wouldnt even come close to keeping anything cool. I know that some of them Mercedes and BMW's had real thin fans and some of them are 17 or 18" and they move a bunch of air. Or you could try and move your radiator foward some and get a Lincoln mark Vlll fan and they move a ton of air. You will need to make sure that you have at least a 95amp alt. to run it and keep everything else working and charging good.

you do know that they make the correct attatchment for a radiator for $4 at autozone right? so you don't have to use 2 of those huuge zip ties per corner. probably work better too. they look like round zip-ties that are about 1/8" in diameter and have round flat ends about 3/4" in diamter to properly mount a fan

Heh, same thing here. Driving across town today it hit 220 so I stopped and let it cool down... I didn't really try to bleed any air out before driving though and it was almost 100 degrees out.

That's what I'm using... don't spose you know where to get the clips that come with the fan, do you? They're like little L shaped plastic things that slide into slots on each corner of the fan. My fan was free but it only came with two clips

I would look for one of the 2-speed fans off an early nineties Taurus with the 3.8L. I have more info if you want but all I remember off hand is 4000cfm on high. I'm going to get one because my fan clutch is so damn loud it's making me insane.

Are you asking me to keep the info to myself?

You have to draw the line somewhere, if you wait to do everything perfect, it will never get driven.

i agree, just an odd place to draw the line

Summer fell on a Tuesday this year, it was a nice day.

Seriously, it does get in the 90's here, and the truck stays cool. I know that's a lot lower than many of you experience. We actually have traffic, too... I does well in stop and go situations.

As far as my rad rad mounts, there are large washers on the front side, so it looks fine. A zip tie by any other name is still a zip tie.

As far a getting air out, I saw a pretty trick rad cap being used to fill a 'Vette the other day. Had a funnel build in, so the height of coolant in the funnel/cap was higher than the highest coolant line. Pretty slick. Fortunately, I haven't had any issues with air in the coolant.

you most likely have a starter for a automatic they have longer snouts on the starter than the manaul trans starters do

Yep, pretty sure that was the case. I got the right starter for my bellhousing and no more noise - the old one stuck into the bellhousing WAY further.
