My 1986 Ranger 2.9 L is still running great, but after almost 20 years the JBA headers that I installed (that I bought for only $300.00) had finally rusted away. Well imagine my surprise when I went online to buy a new set and found out that they have increases almost 3 times what I bought my first set for ( I should have bought two sets). Anyway after using copious amounts of WD-40 I got all 12 header bolts removed without any breaking. I had forgot about the EGR tube that connected to the JBA headers, the Pacesetter headers don't have the fitting like the JBA headers did. My question is what would be the harm if I just plug the fitting at the EGR valve. Any help would be greatly appreciated I'm coming up on my inspection month here in PA.

I plugged mine when I installed my Pacesetters on my old 86 B2. Didn't have to deal with a "sniff" check inspection though. I'll tell you though, it didn't change how the truck drove at all so, who knows?

Fab into the pacesetters

I accidently learned the hard way by purchasing a set of Pacesetters that they didn't fit. The distributor was very helpful and gave a full refund as it was cheaper to mail them back then to pay to have the fabrication done to maintain the EGR system.

That was the choice I made quite a few years ago. I think if the same thing happened to me today I would consider having a bung welded in to continue use of the EGR system with the much less exspensive Pacesetters. I have heard of members just pluging the EGR sensor but I am not inclined to do that. If you live in Ca or any other emission sensitive area you may want to keep that bugger working too.

I don't remember the effects of not making use of the EGR on an EGR 2.9l

disabling the egr system on an 86-87 2.9 usually makes it run like garbage. The "fix" for this is getting an 88+ EEC and installing it, they didn't have an egr system.
