So, my 86 2.9 has multiple problems. I am still sorting it out, but, i may need to replace my computer, my EGR system isnt working(havnt diagnosed it yet). So, i have been reading alot of conflicting info on whether its best to get rid of the EGR system, or not? I am replacing computer any way, should i just get a 88 non EGR computer, and take off and plug/block off all EGR stuff? No emissions check where i live. The truck is originaly a California truck. if i do delete the EGR, what exact truck should the computer be for? What is the difference in new computers marked "California", and "non California"? thanks

I would leave it on and fix it. The mileage of my '87 B2 went way up once I fixed the EGR.

The way that mine was broken was threefold. First, the EGR valve was completely clogged with carbon. I replaced the valve. Second, the passage in the intake was completely clogged with carbon. This took some time to pick out so the hole was open.

For about a year this worked good. Then the EGR tube rusted through right back by the exhaust manifold. One new tube later, and it's all good again.

Keep the EGR. Your truck was designed for it.

Yep..Have to keep the EGR. I believe that the 88+ EEC deletes the need for an EGR. The EEC in an 88 disregards your EGR because there isn't one on the those engines......Maybe 89-92 too but I really dont know about that.

As far as a dianostic about the EGR, check to make sure it's getting vacuum and voltage

Also I have an extra EEC that works in an 86-87. PM me if you are interested in buying.

You can get rid of the EGR if you swap to a later (88-92) EEC. You can get the intake manifold block off plate off of an 88-92 truck as well. The main reasons I dumped my factory EGR were the inability to find a tube at the time and a non functioning EGR valve. If you remove the EGR valve without swapping the computer the truck will run like garbage though.

dump the egr and do the maf conversion. get a 90 computer and add the maf to the eec-iv plug on the computer all you need is a VSS if you dont already have one and have the maf calibrated for your setup. See MAF conversion in the tech library.

Although it's not a bad mod, it's not necessary to do this when eliminating the EGR. BTW using the stock 2.9 MAF you do not need to recalibrate anything.
