Hi ive use the search button to figure out my problems but have been able to completely figure out my options.

The motor i got is a 92 efi 302 from a f150 an im swaping it to carb ive already gotten a ford aluminum 4 barrel intake an holley 600 carb. I was told that i should go with a ford HEI style distributor but how would i go about wiring that?

Also i was cleanin the motor up an where the distributor goes if u look down there by the cam gear theres another hex shape push rod kinda thing just sitting there whats that for?

That engine, if it's a 92, probably has a roller cam. Be sure it has the right cam gear. You'll know if it's a roller or flat tappet camshaft when you have the intake off. The wiring is insanely easy for a HEI dist. Just needs power.... Edit, key on and start power is Red/Light Green wire. That hex rod drives the oil pump. Edit again; prime your oil pump before you drop the dist in and start it up.

well right now i have the intake off so how would i tell the difference between the flat tapper or roller? also that oil pump primer shaft should it move around an beable to slide up threw the distributor opening? when i rolled the motor over on the stand it slid all the way out then slid back down when i rolled it back over?

flat tappet lifters don't have dog bones keeping them from spinning in the bores, and there's a metal spider that holds the dog bones down, that bolt to the lifter valley.

That is normal, there is a clip that prevents it from sliding out. Who ever took the dist out, the shaft sometimes sticks and can push that clip down. It's to prevent it from falling out. Definitely prime the oil pump to make sure that it has engaged the pump correctly !!!!

This is what a roller engine looks like, a flat tappet won't have the big tin thing that goes to all the lifters.

If you have the pan/pump off it wouldn't be a bad idea to replace that shaft, they are pretty cheap and it is easy to do. There is a spec on where that clip is supposed to be too.

I unhooked my distributor and cranked it until I had oil pressure before I tried to start it, what a rush that night was... :yahoo:

If it's a 92 motor and it's got a roller cam, now would be a good time to upgrade the cam. The one it's got will be the smallest of the factory roller cams, a switch to a 94-97 pickup/van cam (this is the F4TE cam) or an Explorer/Mountaineer cam (also the F4TE cam) or an HO roller will do wonders, especially if run with 1.7 full roller rockers (93-95 Cobra or Crane 1.7 Energizers) this will give the valve lift a bump up to .473 from the base roller's .395 lift specs
