Hi all, I have a 93 Ranger 5spd, with the 2.3 Duratec. I have gone thru the code reading procedures, both with test light and using the CEL method using the jumper wire and all.

I can't get any codes to blink. The CEL is constantly on and the truck runs like crap when you throttle up, spewing blackish & blue smoke out the pipe. (not White smoke) It smells like its running pretty rich.

Need codes to start a baseline for repairs.

Anyone have an idea of what I can do to first, get it to post any codes and second, to diagnose the smoking issue.

BTW, at idle, it runs sort of okay, but still smoking....

Thanks guys.

First thing I'd do is check the fuel pressure regulator. Then I'd check the MAP if equipped.
I would also double check that I am following the hookup method for checking EEC-IV codes. You need a jumper wire in addition to a VOM to check. If you have a tester that is dedicated to Ford style, it must have a good 9-volt battery installed, and, again, you must follow the procedure for hook-up, ignition switch position, etc, to enable codes to appear.
It must be doing something as it is running the injectors(maybe poorly, but still..)

With the key off connect the jumper wire like this. Have a pad and pencil ready to write the codes when you turn on the key.

They go rather quick I found it best to have someone write the numbers down as you count. He is not erasing the memory properly when it starts flashing codes you pull the jumper to erase the memory. Then disconnect the battery for 1/2 an hour to reset the computer and you can start fresh. Go ahead and take it for a short trip at medium speeds for 20 minutes to fully warm the engine up. Then with the engine hot connect the jumper engine off and do the KOEO test and record the codes. Start the motor after you disconnect the jumper and heat up the O2 senser then do the KOER test. Key off connect the jumper and start the motor and wait for the single flash and floor it after the single flash for a few seconds and then write down the codes as they flash. Then get back with the codes it gives. Allways address the lowest number first, if you clean or change a senser erase the memory and reset the computer to confirm the repair. Then you can go on to the next code if necessary. One bad senser can throw multiple codes allways address the lowest number first and retest.

Hi all, I have a 93 Ranger 5spd, with the 2.3 Duratec.

One thing I'm going to point out is that unless it has been swapped in, you don't have the 2.3 Duratec. You have would have the 2.3 Lima if it is stock. Further more, you would also have OBD2 if it was a Duratec, and not the EEC-IV. Just thought I would point that out incase you didn't know. Would make searching the internet for problems a lot easier.
