Edelbrock 1404 Rich or Lean??

I have a new 4bbl 1404 model number, 500cfm carb and its running rich. The engine is a stock 302 except for a 4bbl performer manifold and the carb. The engine runs decent but the plugs are still black. I cant get the engine up to WOT, maxes out at about 4k rpm, but it idles like a top. The engine just revs up slow. Checked the fuel pressure and its right at 6psi. Anybody reccommend anything to make it run leaner?

im not a member of that site so they only allow me to view page 1..it was helpfull. Thx!

will having a carb running rich affect the power of the engine? Its been about 6 months and i still cannot get this 302 to run good. I step on the gas and hold it to the floor and it maxes out at about 4,200 rpm and gets there SLOWLY. No major backfiring..but it pops when its up there. The idle is so so..not exactly SMOOTH but it idles between 600 and 800..

Is your timing set right? Is your vacuum advance functioning properly (if it has one)?

the timing is correct. As far as the vac advance, i am unsure what port to hook it to on my Edelbrock carb. It seems to work better on the right side one..but many ppl say to hook it to the left side.

maybe im experiencing a lean condition. From doing alot of research online, engine stumbling and WOT not maxing out is a lean condition. Im getting horrible throttle response off the line and throughout the band. I just want this thing to SCREAM like it should! This carb is brand new.

thx for the info, Skippy. It has all helped me alot. I will take my carb off and play with the main jets and metering rods, and check my float height to make sure its at 7/16".

another test is to pull a spark plug after driving and check the color, white porcelin -lean,tan-just right.hang in there it's worth it.

i did the spark plug test and all the plugs are dark black, time to lean it down a couple sizes.

Not real familiar with these carbs, but check the float levels and the accelerator pumps to make sure the diaphragms arent busted. Be two things id check before i started changing the jets...

i got my carb tuning kit today. Im kind of confused as to what the numbers mean

Metering Jets
.083 .089 .092 .098

Metering Rods
.057" x .049"
.062" x .052"
.063" x .047"
.068" x .052"
.067 x .055"

Metering Rod Springs
blue - 3 in hg
yellow - 4 in hg
orange - 5 in hg
pink - 7 in hg
silver 8 in hg

I need to lean the carb down a bit since my plugs are black. Does the smaller the jet , rods, springs give less fuel? I figure i will have to experiement a bit with it, but i dont have an owners manual to know what all this stuff means, alil basic help would help me alot!

mudder,if you have not done this before you will need instructions and or the tuning dvd.google edelbrock tuning and do the research,it pays to have all the info and step by step procedures.

i've been through it with holley lately,no carb is ready to go out of the box regardless of what they tell you.you have to dial it in to your engine and it takes awhile as you know.i even had to raise the level in the bowl, easy as hell w/holley.
