On my 87 4x4 ranger 2.9 v6 with the fm145, five speed. where is the ECU at and where is the plug for the OBD1 reader. I looked under the hood its not in the place as my 93 ranger. thanks

AFAIK ecu is under passenger side kickplate.
obd1 connector is under hood passenger side close to firewall. You may have to dig a little.

Yep it's EEC-IV, not obd1. Google EEC-IV codes and you'll find how to use a jumper wire to run the engine self-test where it flashes codes through the check engine light. Lots of fun, be prepared to repeat several times until you get the hang of it.

I'm confused, isn't eec4 a designation for the ecu and obd1 a designation for the diagnostics protocol?

Yes, EEC-xx is the computer model

OBD is the protocol to "talk" with the computer.

Ford EEC-IV computers were all OBD I(1) but some later versions were a little different, standard OBD I readers couldn't "talk" with the software running on the EEC-IV.
In mid-1995 and up the EEC-V computer was used and OBD II(2) was also used.
With OBD II the connector is required to be within 2ft of the steering wheel, and it uses a standard protocol.

With OBD I there was no such requirement, connector could be anywhere, lol.
But best bet is near firewall passenger side or drivers side, usually Grey plastic and kind of triangle shaped
Look here for shape and reading codes: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/OBD_I.shtml
