Can you use an ECM from an AUTOMATIC explorer and put in a MANUAL ranger when doing a 4.0 swap

It will run. The CEL will be on and it might run a little funny, but it will run and drive.

I know when i used an auto ECU it would start to cut out everytime you reached a certain RPM and speed. Basically whenever it thought it needed shift it acted like it was loosing fuel.

Also throws CEL for the missing solenoids and torque converter.

So what year 4.0 ECUs will work best with the 94 manual trans ? Should I ever go yarding I want to get a good one. TIA

Find something that has a 4.0, manual transmission, EGR (if applicable), same year, etc.

93-94 models work the best for this particular swap. I am using a ECU from a 93 ranger on my 93 "X" swap in my 84 BII. No lights, or funny antics from the motor in almost 2 years. As was stated, watch for EGR compatabilty, if needed. The 93 "X" that I got the motor from had NO EGR, but the 94 that I looked at DID. The Ranger computer was more common as a manual setup, so, that was a "gimme" I figured.
