Hey guys, I looked but couldn't find the answer to this one so maybe someone can help.

I am building an '88 Ranger xcab 4x, converting from automatic to manual.
I pulled the ECM out of my '87 xcab 4x manual donor intending it as a replacement for the auto ECM in the '88. That is all well and fine until I look at it and it says 3.0 Sable only on it. I don't have it in front of me now but will later after work.

Anyone have a suggestion on where I can look up the cross compatability for the ECMs? I have an '86 STX donor that had been converted to manual previously and have not looked at that ECM yet, this vehicle does not run, therefore I have little expectation on electrical parts from it short of wires etc.

I don't want to order an ECM if I can help it, but that is not out of the question.

Thanks

Next week is the big build week to hopefully get the '88 up and running.
Thread and pics to come after most of the work is done.

Well, I dunno about 3.0 Sables. Wouldn't think that would run a 2.9 all that well.

I do know that an 87 Ranger computer will run an 88 of the same engine, but be upset about the lack of an EGR system. Your auto computer will work for now, in the mean time, check the junk yards.

I can't be much help but I do remember a while back someone posted that they had removed the ecu from their truck and it was marked 3.0 sable only. Pretty sure it was a 2.9 around the same vintage as yours.

Hmm, maybe a batch got mislabeled.

I have an '86 STX that has been converted to manual sitting there too. I just haven't had the time to look at that one's box to see what interesting thing I find there.

This should prove to be interesting to say the least. I know that the auto ecm will work and complain about egrs and lack of torque lock up and various things. We shall see, the moments of truth are coming quickly.

Thanks for your input guys, I'm sure I'll be back again and any more input is valued.
