I have an 86 supercab 4x4 ranger with the 2.9 and was wondering what engine would be the easiest to swap in that would be an upgrade over the 2.9? This probably won't make sense, but my 2.9 is in great shape but it is unbelievably slow and gets 13mpg and i just can't figure it out and no one else seems to have any ideas. I should also say that I'm currently running a C4. thanks for any help.

4.0 out of an Explorer seems to be the most common and parts are readily available.

What kind of RPM's does the 4.0 like? The way i'm set up now, at 55-60mph i run about 2800-3100 rpm (3.73's, 31 inch tires, C4 no overdrive) and i thought i read awhile back the 4.0 likes somewhere around 1700rpm, i could be wrong on that though. and if i get the engine wiring for a 4.0 will all the plugs, if there are any, plug up to my truck without modification? and is there any year that is better than another. I thought i also heard the earlier ones aren't as good, and will the later 4.0's that have 205 horse work as easy?
