Easiest way to modify my open diff to a limited slip.

If throw in a Spartan locker. They are cheap and are stronger than the old Tru-Trac.

I don't want to swap in an Explorer axle. although a disc conversion would be nice, I'd have to swap out the master cylinder, as the Ranger's isn't calibrated for rear disc. What's more, if I swap in anything different than a 4.10, and end up having to swap out the ring gear and pinion, that means taking it to a shop and getting everything adjusted just right. If I'm going to do an axle swap, I want to avoid going into the diff.

I can find an entire FX4 axle, as well as an FX4 Level II axle at a wrecker here. They want something like $350 - $450, depending on the model. What are these things actually worth, used? That is more money than I wanted to spend...

The newer Rangers use the same master as the Expo...

First gen Expo axles are 31 spline, drum brake, and commonly found with limited slip, but not 4.10

Gen 2 Expo are disc, and are commonly found with 4.10s and LS.

IMO Expo 8.8 is worth 250 tops..

Ya, just phoned a few local wreckers, and they all want about $500 for an FX4 axle/diff assembly. That is highway robbery! Buncha crooks! Looks like this project is off, and I'm stuck with an open diff :(

The torsen lok in the fx4 is worth the 500....its not like the useless Trac lok

Ford Trac loc rebuilt 175$
Used $75
The Spartan is about 350. I had a guy at Offroad connection quote me 275 over the phone though.
You were gonna put a used locker in there anyways.

I run a Yukon Grizzly in my 9" that thing is an absolute monster on streetability. I really trust it though.
I had an old Lock Right in my Camaro. It had over a hundred drag passes on it when I sold the car. At $340 they are a good unit.

That spartan is shown for a 31-spline. I don't see one for a 28-spline.

I see the Powertrax Lock-Right for a 28-spline... how are those?

I see that now looks like the lock-right and the Yukon DuraGrip is the only thing comparable to the Spartan in a 28 spline.

I had never even heard of the DuraGrip until I started googling 28 spline specific lockers for an 8.8

The Powertrax Lock-right is advertised at $340, until you select the model for 28-spline, and they add $115 to it. Grrr. I'm still looking for cheap. Maybe someone on here has a used one, LOL!

Lock Right and call it a day.

Get a 31-spline Explorer axle.

Its just not worth the money to get parts for the 28 spline - adding things like a LS will only increase the chance you break stuff in an already less-than-strong axle.

The 31-spline has a much wider assortment of LSs and lockers too - An Aussie Locker for it is only $280, comes with a warranty and takes all of 15 minutes to install.

If you can find someone parting out a truck, you should be able to get an axle for under $200.

at the end of the day, there is just no good way to get a cheap LS, unless you consider replacing your current axle with another Ranger 8.8 that already has the LS in it.
