I have a 2001 Ranger with the 4.0. Built in dec 00. My question is can I run e85 in it? I think I read on the window sticker that I could. Any pros and cons of running it?

I dont know the answer on if you can or cannot, however as for pros/cons

Pro: E85 is cheaper
Con: The energy available to create is less. Meaning you will get worse gas mileage so you it really doesnt save you any more $$$. You also have to fuel up more often, which is a pain

Pro: Better Emissions
Con: you truck smells like McDonalds.

Pro: none
Con: Hard to find E85 stations

Thats my $.02

Been hearing quite a few reports lately that E85 will gum up your engine much much faster than regular gas.

I believe the opposite would prove true. It is possible that the alcohol would remove all the junk in the tank and clog up the fuel filter though.

yes many have to change the filter often or go to a screened fitler. E85 has a stioch AF of somewhere around 9:1 vs 14.7:1 for gasoline. it has an octane rating of 105+ so its basically 3.00$ race fuel from the pump. Lots of boosted cars making 800+rwhp are running this stuff

What would be a good way to make sure my truck can run it? I would like to give it a try for a tank or two.

Did you buy this truck new? You said you thought it read on the window sticker that you could run E85. I thought only the 3.0 Liter were offered as FFVs. Easiest way might be to call Ford with you VIN and ask.
