My credo
I poop in the furnace.
Its my understanding they are the same base engine. Not that I'll ever do it, but can you just throw an 2.3 EcoBoost head and turbo on a 2.3 duratec? I understand the computer stuff would be waaaaay different, but the physical parts and short blocks are the same right?

Here is Ford's statement about the differences between the NA 3.5L and the EB 3.5L.

"The Ecoboost 3.5L is the same as the naturally aspirated version except for the heads, block, pistons, rods, crank, cams, and oil pan are different to accommodate the added stresses and needs of the turbocharged direct injected fuel system".

I imagine the same is true of the Duratec engines. They share common dimensions, but the parts to not interchange in the slightest.

For example I know the 2.3D-tech ships filled with oil. I also know the 2.3EB doesn't ship with oil since it will slosh out the turbo oil return during shipping, a hole that doesn't exist on the NA block. There are also coolant feeds/returns to consider. Your naturally aspirated engine won't have the forged internals to handle the 30-ish PSI of boost.

+1 ^^^

No, not the same, although transmission bolt pattern is the same

Like 4.0l OHV and 4.0l SOHC share the same trans bolt pattern, but most engine parts are NOT interchangeable :)

So... You're telling me that the 2.3EB will bolt to the same trans as the 2.3D?

Yes. In fact, should I ever get bored with the 4.0 a 2.3EB 4x4 setup is likely my next setup.

More power than the 4.0, better MPG, more room to work, and cooler. Gonna have to do something about that vacuum pump though.

So that's why bobby is hell-bent on getting the EB to fit. Makes sense. I've seen a few muskrats develop some serious power with them.

So, just hijacking this thread here...

Transfer case and manual trans options? Was under the impression EB swaps were limited to 2wd only?

Unfortunately the 4x4 trans would have to be made/converted, as the 2.3l Duratec M5OD-R1 was never available in 4WD

Although the 10-speed auto is available in 4x4 configuration for the 2.3l DOHC :)

I’d try to find Dirtman’s truck if I had to vomit.

Well if you were swapping the 2.3l EB into a 4WD Ranger, 1990 and up, you would have the shorter 4WD M5R1(M5OD-R1) tail shaft and housing to swap over to a 2WD M5R1 from a 2.3l Duratec, and the BW1354 transfer case

The Ranger 2.3l EB specs show 270hp with 310ft/lb torque
M5R1 is rated at 331ft/lb max
Not sure of the rating of a BW1354 transfer case?

But 2.3l EB can be 350hp with 350ft/lb torque
Mustang 2.3l EB shows 310hp with 320ft/lb and up to 350ft/lb

Sounds like that setup would be pushing the limits of the M5OD, but not to the point where it would be concerning (ok, granted, I generally dgaf 'till it breaks), so it's "technically" doable.

Appreciate it Ron. More fuel for my ADD/ADHD fire ??

I snapped a rear output shaft of a 13-50 (same as the 13-54) with a 2.9l, image what I could do to one behind an engine with power.
