Im in the process of going the duraspark route in my 84 (2.8). Im actually going to be using a GM HEI ignition module instead as it really cuts on the wires needed.

I know I need to keep the oil pressure wire, temp wire, and alternator wires, but can I just get rid of the whole computer also? Technically, I won't be using it anymore right? Just wanna double check before I take it out.

Yes that is correct.

The computer only controls the engine. This forum is just about dead.

at the grey 8 wire connector by the ignition coil strip the harness back to the alternator. You will see what wires to save and what ones to cut at the 8 wire connector you should only have to cut a couple wires to remove the computer harness.

Once I removed the computer harness I took some of the sheathing and taped the wires being used nice and neat and put them in the plastic sheath nice and purty. Keep the coil wires hooked up just cut the dark green/yellow wire long so you can connect it to the green wire from the module. There is a two wire connector you just plug right into the module the white and red wires are backwards but it is correct just plug it into the module then you just have the three wires for the distributor. I found a harness from a 1984 ranger 2.0 and made it plug and play. the only wire I had to splice was the green coil neg. Been running three years now with zero issues with the stock coil.

According to the tech write up, using the gm switch would add wires, the 84 is pretty much plug and play.

Are you talking about the pressure switch for O/D lockout I dont believe the 84 ranger came with the A4LD, but yes it adds wires if you have the overdrive auto.

No, he talking about using a gm ignition switch instead of a duraspark box. Granted mine was an 85, I would think an 84 would look a whole hell of a lot cleaner using the dspark box and finding a harness from an older car for it.

Yeah, I'm using a GM ignition switch. I'll take pics when done but there's only gonna be 6 wires...two of which are ground wires. Doesn't get any cleaner than that!
