I have an 88 Ford Ranger 2.0L that won't start now. It was running in my driveway and I went to move it and it died and now won't start again. The truck just cranks. I checked for spark at the plug and the coil but no juice. I checked the voltage at the positive (red wire) side of the coil and it has good voltage. I checked the voltage on the red wire at the ignition module and there is good voltage there too. I had the ignition box (blue strain) tested and it passed three times. I swapped the coil (canister style) and solenoid since I had new ones laying around and that didn't help.

I'm trying to figure out where to go from here. Would a misaligned armature cause a no spark condition if it wasn't aligned with the stator inside the distributor? I know the truck will start right up if I can get spark back.

Thanks,

James

Put a spark plug in the ignition coil wire and lay it on a good ground turn the key on and with a jumper wire touch coil neg to engine ground quick touches the plug should fire every time you trigger it. If you get spark the coil is good then crank on the motor and see if the plug fires quickly. If so the distributor cap, rotor and plug wires are suspect. If not do a ohms check on the reluctor coil in the distributor the purple and orange wires should have low resistance less than 10 ohms. If so the reluctor is good. You tested the module the only thing left is ground to the module. Ground is the black wire from the distributor to the module make sure it has a good ground.
I just checked my schematics and the reluctor wires are orange/yellow and pink/lt blue and the ground wire is black/lot green. pull the connector at the module apart and check for low resistance between the reluctor pins and the to engine ground with the ground pi in the connector.

Thanks Kim. I had to drive something else this week. I'll check what you referenced this weekend.
