So, after taking some leisurely time off and working on my Bronco, I have gotten a new job. I got hired on as a draftsman at a fab shop. I'm really enjoying it. Anywho, on to the cool part. I asked my boss if I could raid the scrap bin for materials for my next project at home, whatever it may be. He said go for it. So today I pulled my truck up and pulled this out.

8ft X 8in grating
26" X 12" X 1" plate
2ft & 3ft 4" X 4" X 1/4"
2ft 4" X 4" X 3/16"
3ft X 1ft 5/16 plate
4.5ft 5" X 5" X 3/8"
and some other stuff

There was more of that grating, but I figured one was enough for now, I dont have plans for any of this stuff, but having it makes me feel all warm inside. (take note, the scrap iron truck came and emptied out 3 bins yesterday! this was only a fraction of what was already in them since then!)

I dont know about you, but to me, this is gold. I only hope I can get away with this 2-3 times a month, I will have such a stockpile :D:D:D

My wheelin' pal's uncle owns a fabl shop. They have an amazing scrap selection. We get free run of what ever's there, along with use of the shop.
It's quite badass.

Good finds there, man.

sell it at a recycling yard.

um, for 2 cents per ton? no thanks. thats why I'm getting it for free! lol, that is good straight, new steel, small chunks, but thats fine, most of the building I do is small stuff.

I'll bring ruined twisted garbage steel to the scrap yard.

Dishtowel, dude you just gave me a wicked idea for a grille guard for my pickup now that I've seen that long piece of iron grate on the left.

What's a piece like that cost?

2 cents per ton??? man they are offering like 95 bucks a ton for cars (last i checked) over here.....pick up a junker car and put the stuff you know you wont use in the back (like that 1'' plate)

nice finds though dude...lots of that stuff will come in handy...

I had to wrastle that plate out of the scrap bin, I'm guessing, 90lbs, it measures 26" x 12" x 1".

Predator, I DO think that I will use it, thats why I wrestled it out of the bin! lol, I dont know what for yet, but, who knows, we farm as well, and has some pretty heavy farm machinery that sometimes needs repaired. Who knows what it will get used for, limiting skids on the bottom of out snow pushing blade?

What does that piece of grill cost? I dont know, but I do know that If i went to the steel retailer in town here and bought what I just scavenged I would be paying over $160, that piece of grill is probably $60-80 for me.

I'm a "packrat" myself, toting home anything I think I can use. In my opinion, you did real good, man. Keep mining your source as long as can. Happy diving!

well if you ever use that 1'' plate....i wanna see pics of whatever you used it for!!!!

wow thats some good stuff there.i got a big chunk of 1" plate too. probably 10"x20". the thing is that i dont have much use for it other than as an anvil. i also have 2 pieces of 6" x3/8" x 10' angle iron. dont have much use for that either. all im saying is that you gotta be carefull what you bring home. you will always be able to get this stuff from the dumpster so just take what is usefull. i have cleaned out so much junk that i dumpster dived to get that i had to make about 5 trips with my truck.

thats pretty sweet... we have a Huge assortment of scrap metal around the house.. some nice new small pieces an a pretty wide range pile of pipes, angle iron, square tubing, 3/8 plates, STAINLESS, diamond plate, never know when you might need a piece of steel!

With your eyes open its amazing what you can find. I have delivered pizza for 12 years and can't remember all of the riding mowers, attachements and other I have picked up that had been left out for the trash guy or whoever. For metal projects I have picked up many used exercise machines. Lots of good metal, joints, bends etc for this and that lawnmower project.

I'd give you predators left nut for that plate steel. That's one hell of a find. I'd love to have a resource like that available to me.

A friend of mine took a summer job with a welding shop last year and after he started school he filled up the bed of his Yota with scrap. Its been awesome, we haven't even made a dent in what he brought us.
