I have an 88 ranger 2.9L that started to run real rough and smoke white a bunch. I pulled the spark plugs out and they where all wet with fuel. I checked the oil and it was way over full and smelled like fuel. I did a compresion check and all cylinders where still good So the rings are just letting fuel past. I borrowed an ecm and that made it run good for about a day and a half then went back to running bad. I'm thinking it was just a coinsidence. The last thing I did was put a fuel regulator on it. Still no fix. I have also installed a new O2 sensor and a TPS a few month ago. Please help!

It could be that the fuel vapor cannister is full of gas and is now being sucked into the throttle body. Mine had the solenoid removed by a previous owner and the vapor line run right to the throttle body. I also had a weak coil and bad coil plug-in that might have been some of my problem.

White smoke indicates anything EXCEPT fuel! Extra fuel smokes BLACK! ONLY black smoke tells you about a rich mixture.
All that other crap about over full oil and such doesn't hold up under scrutiny..
If there were so much fuel in there that it gets past the rings the thing wouldn't even pop, much less start and run..
So lets start looking in the right direction... Plugs, wires, coil, timing, your problem IS ELECTRIC!

I dont know what to tell you. I get about 50 miles per tank of fuel. My oil dip stick is way over full and smells like fuel. My coolant is staying right where it should be. I guess I should have said my smoke is more blueish white. I can go about 30 MPH tops. My exhaust manifolds are wet and wen I pull my spark plugs out they are dripping with fuel. Why would I lie when I just want my truck to run.

Stuck injectors, bad fuel pressure regulator, or something wrong with your EVAP canister.

Your problems lies inside the fuel system.

Whatever it is it went away for about 40 miles when I put a spare ecm on it. Everything cleaned up all at once. But then it came back. Thats why Im thinking its not injectors. I just put a regulator on as well. How do you tell if the evap canister is bad? Someone said before might be a map sensor?

Could be MAP if it's not sensing any vacuum when there's actually vacuum, but that's pretty hit and miss. Think you should run through diagnostic tests first.

Check your vacume lines on your fuel regulator. If gas is in the lines your regulator is bad.

If what he is saying is correct... bad fuel milage, wet plugs, white or blue smoke.. If simply doesn't fit excess fuel! As we all know excess fuel causes extreme black smoke! ONLY black smoke would showing from all that fuel..
I'm still betting on lectric something or other..

If you haven't already, change your oil. It should take ~ 5 quarts with a new filter. Maybe being overfull is causing oil to get in the cylinders and be burnt. If so, you'll probably need new o2 sensor as well. Checked vacuum lines?

Get a fuel pressure guage and monitor the fuel pressure at an idle, WOT and watch it after you shut it down. If the pressure drops quick after you turn it off it could be three things, check valve in pump probably not that fuel goes back into tank. Injectors check all the plugs not all will be leaking at the same time and pressure regulator check for fuel in the vacuum line going to it. Never run it if you smell fuel on the dipstick you have to figure out why it is there. Disconnect the vapor cannister vacuum and plug it at the TB to see if that helps. If it is running at all with all that fuel I dont think spark has anything to do with it it is getting spark. My guess is injectors if all of the plugs are not wet it will run on the cylinders that are burning. Disconnect the injectors one at a time while it is running to find the ones that are working. Unless the new regulator you put in is bad it has to be injectors putting fuel into the crankcase. Cap the vapor line nipple to the TB first off if all the plugs are getting wet.

Oh yea put a timing light on all the plug wires while it is running to see if they are all getting spark just in case.

I don't want to hijack your thread but I am having the exact same problem.
Mine is an 88 2.3 though

Wet plugs, seems like # 1 is the wettest
rough idle
fuel in oil, a little over full line
good compression
good fpr on the rail
good fuel pressure
fuel pressure leaks to 0 in about 5 min (pretty sure its the pump I'll know in a day or two)
vacuum gauge flutters around 12-14
I swapped out the upper/lower intake, fuel rail, throttle body from an extra motor I have.

My smoke is gray by the way.
It will run rough and smoke pretty heavy,
then it will smooth out for a minute the smoke will clear up and the vacuum gauge will read normal.
Then it goes back to running rough and smoking.
My check engine light doesn't work but when I pull the codes with a meter the best I can tell all it's showing is EGR which is disconnected because I added a header.
