More data on the fuel systems:
The carburetted fuel system will look like the fuel injected setup, but are not interchangeable. Physically, the tanks will mount the same, but the sender units are different sizes where they mount. The electrical connections are not the same, and the lines are also different. Generally, this is '83/84/and '85 with carbs, and '86 onward for injection.
Every Diesel Ranger I've seen had dual tanks, whether 2.2L or Turbo 2.3L. IIRC, they ran diesel into the '87 model year. I don't recall if any of their fuel system had interchangeable parts with the gasoline trucks. I suspect that they used the carburetted tanks and lines, though.
Consider adapting block heaters to the rear tank, so it can be pre-warmed. Might need to insulate the fuel lines to keep them warm, also.
