Im looking to do a catback dual on my 2.5. I dont want to lose backpressure so would running 2 1/4 inch pipes be alright or would it still hurt my low end?

If you want dual, I would go with 2". It's only a 4 cylinder.

Back pressure is not an issue at all.

... why do you want duals on a 4 cylinder? Please tell me you've heard what it sounds like in the past.

i had a "fake dual" exhaust setup on my '88 2.3 ranger, a exhaust shop put a muffler with a dual outlet and a pipe going to each rear corner. it was quiet, what i liked about it was in winter with it being cold, i had "smoke" coming off both rear corners. being that it was a 4cyl, there wasnt alot of it with it being spilt between 2 pipes. im not sure what the tailpipe dia was, and being after the converter, there is no backpressure issue. ive known of a few people that have tossed the muffler altogether and had a splittler to run fake duals with. it souds cool with a V8, awful with a 4 cyl.

2 1/2 is too big just for the sake of making the bends around the spare tire and sway bars and such. Just run 2 1/4" with the size tip you want.

+1 My dad's Ranger sounds like a pissed off bumblebee coming down the road... It's got catback duals with no muffler(s)... Not a sound I care for that much... Not very "ricer" though... Just funny...

im runnign the gibson dual catback on my 07 fx4, its a single in dual out, but the pipes are only 1.75" coming out the muffler, but it doesnt sound ricey at all, just a low rumble...maybe something you should look into..smaller pipes

arent you running a 4.0L? he is a 4cyl. The dual tips in the rear looks good on darn near any truck, but the sound is a different story. But then again, everyone has a different idea of what "cool" is, even if its not everyone else's. Check out youtube, if you like the sound, do it. But you should probably hear it first. i put one on my 93 4cyl, and man it was a bad idea (in my opinion). It ended up with the nickname "hondaranger" yuck.

I built a muffler out of a piece 1/4"x12"x8" oil well casing, with a single inlet and dual 2" outlets. Dual chambered with a wingplate baffle inside. Put it on my 88 2.5 S-10, and that thing rumbled. I'm guessing that the thick casing and open chambers produced some large, deep, sound waves with just enough baffling to break them up into a nice grumble instead of a buzz.

Just something for you to consider.

If you are running 2 mufflers anyway you can run standard quiet mufflers(generic car mufflers) and still get a massive flow improvement over the original single exhaust.
That way you get your duals without a horrible racket.
The 4 cyl won't be pushing enough exhaust flow to benefit from adding hi-po mufflers to the mix anyway.

ok think about this the 4.6 is basically dual 2.3L attached at the crank, so if you run true duals off a 4.6 all your getting is 2.3L on each side right?
just my mind at idle
but this is how I think of things a true dual 2.3L at 3000 rpm will sound like a true dual 4.6 running at 1500 rpm wouldn't it?
or am I idling down the wrong path?
