Dual exhaust on a 4 cyl

+2 that just makes no sence at all.

Most Exhaust Shops carry a brand of mufflers by the name of IMCO. They make a "Semi-Loud" single in-dual out, style of muffler that closely resembles a Flowmaster. It produces a low, civilized grumble and will let you run your duals for apperance sakes.

here's a video of my old 97 Ranger's 2.3 exhaust. It was 4-1 stock header, Magnaflow Cat, about one foot of pipe into a slitter dual 2-1/4 inch pipe straight out the back, into 3.5 inch tips. personally I loved the sound, and still got great gas mileage. video was with a digital camera so video did NOT do it justicehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1MWkeyCe94

The only 4 cylinder I'd consider running duals on is the 4BT. But I'll never have one of those since I'll never buy a Jeep.

I have a cat back duel on my 93 with a 2.3. It has what they call at the shop a performance muffler. It is not load and does not sound ricey at all. Even when I am on the gas I can still hear my radio without an annoying buzz. I also have a cold air intake. I have gained at least a about a gallon more per mile and the truck flys now. I can go from 0 to 60 in under a day now!!:D

Whatever you do, do not run duals. Its a 4 cyl for crying out loud, it cannot ever sound like a V8. So don't try. Throw any flowmaster muffler under it and call it a day.

I have a flowmaster knock off with no cat and it sounds great with only 2" pipe from the manifold.

no offense but there is no point in dual exhaust on a 4 cylender. i mean how can it help? most of the reason why people have dual exhaust is for either a v6 or a v8 for better flow cause it has exhaust manifolds on both sides of the engine and cylenders on both sides so if it were me i would probably just modify it to come out in front of one of the wheels and a flowmaster muffler. PLEASE DONT PUT DUAL EXHAUST ON A 4 CYLENDER. IT JUST DOESN'T MAKE SENSE! AND ALSO PEOPLE WILL ASK YOU WHAT YOU HAVE UNDER THE HOOD AND YOU WOULD SAY THAT YOU HAVE A 4 BANGER. AND THEN YOU WOULD PROBABLY FEEL LIKE AND IDIOT!

some people do it for looks, others do it just to say they did it.
I've never been one to follow the crowd, and I've found out some pretty cool things by going against what others have told me, then again I've found out that they were right. So if you don't like it, oh well at least you know now and you can agree with these guys.

Well, since it is an inline 4, you don't have half the cylinders, you have 4 cylinders that go down one pipe until you split the SOUND into. There is no way to have true duals on an inline 4, so go with whatever you want man. Don't let other people opinions deter you from what YOU want to do.

^^Rep Funnyman, I like the way you think :)

saw a little 4 cyl opel that had a dual exaust with glass packs, and it sounded like a can of drunken bees-not good!,dual exaust has no place on a 4cyl pick up,not enough exaust flow to warrant a dual exaust system, dynomax makes a nice ,cheap exaust system,i have one on my truck,it sounds good, its not obtrusive, even picked up a little top end power increse, not bad for $100.

just get a nice muffler and it will sound good.
thats what i did on mine. replaced the stock muffler with a flowmaster original 40 and thats it. stock cat and pipes.

it has a nice low hum when idle and gets a bitloud when im on full gas, but it wont pop or scream like a ricer.

ok think about this the 4.6 is basically dual 2.3L attached at the crank, so if you run true duals off a 4.6 all your getting is 2.3L on each side right?
just my mind at idle
but this is how I think of things a true dual 2.3L at 3000 rpm will sound like a true dual 4.6 running at 1500 rpm wouldn't it?
or am I idling down the wrong path?
:icon_confused:

Mathematically you are correct. But this is one of those things that doesn't work out well in mathematical terms.

The sounds frequency is determined by engine speed. The pitch is determined by displacement. One engine running at 3000 won't be likely to sound like any other engine running at 1500, no matter how the math makes it look.
