I would like to put dual exaust on my 88 Ranger. What would I have to do to give me silence from dual exaust, without hinderencing engine performance. I want something not to loud, but good sounding.

The 2.9L only has one o2 sensor, running as two separate sections or banks (left and right) will reduce your performance. In other words, it would be a bad idea for you to run duals from the manifolds back.

IMO, keep you collector pipe and cat. Redo cat back and do a "fake" dual exhaust. You can either use 2 separate mufflers or a single muffler with dual outs. Exhaust sound is eye of the beholder, you might have to play around with different stuff until you find something you're happy with.

there is no reason to do true dual exhaust on these trucks aside from sound (true duals sound better than split duals). there are no performance gains to be had.

i personally dont like split duals. they add weight, cost, and complexity to the system but sound exactly the same as single exhaust. plus the system will always favor one pipe which means steam will only come out of one tip on cold days.

if you run true duals for the sound, you can quiet it down with some big, quiet mufflers (stay away from the louder flowmasters that everyone uses).

I have true duals on my 95 4.0 and she has a nice low rumble when idling, when I accelerate she gets progressively louder up to about 3 - 4K, then just screams - LOL. I kept my original cat, cut the drivers down pipe at the wye and on the drivers side where it met with the new pipe, new cat and 2 Flowmasters side by side where the stock one would go and then it turns out - two tips in front of passenger rear tire.
I really like the sound of it, and when she is revved - sweeeeeeeet.

no equalizer?

an EQ is where you get that real dual exhaust hollar. its also important for proper function of the exhaust system. 3 cylinders firing alternatly in 2 banks doesnt produce enough volume to maintain the velocity in 2 seperate pipes.

My '86 2.9 parts truck had two pipes running into the first cat, with a pipe just like that and the 02 sensor in the middle of it, it all looked original, the cat was factory welded to the same pipe that came down from the manifolds. That may help put true duals on later 2.9's.

I didn't bother with the EQ on my true duals, sounds awesome and downshifts less on hills. Might not have gained as much as I could have but I did gain some snort.

No EQ on mine either and she gets plenty loud. The guy that put mine on had been in the industry close to 40 years. I have seen/heard a lot of his work and trusted his method. I have not had any problems in any form. If was to do it again - out the back with hidden turndowns for that stealth look - just not sounding stealth - LOL.
