Ok, I have a 1994 ranger xl 2wd 3.0 5spd manual with 9 inch drums(made in Minnesota) and I am replacing the rear drums and shoes. I have everything together and have replaced everything, drums, shoes, wheel cylinders, and all the hardware, to include the star wheel adjuster, automatic adjuster cable, even the parking brake cables... everything. My issue is the adjuster lever for the star adjuster wheel on both sides is not stopping the star adjuster from spinning? when I pull back on the cable it engages but as soon as I let go it doesn't work? I have confirmed the parts are correct, assembled and disassemble both brake assemblies 6 times or more thinking I had done it incorrectly but the same thing keeps happening. Can anyone offer any suggestions.

thanks,

Is it possible that you may have inadvertently swapped the adjusters ( star wheel assemblies) from one side to the other? I think one side is reverse threaded. So if they are swapped, they won't work.

both adjusters are on the correct sides, so that is not the issue. it almost seems as if the adjuster cable is too long, and in case anyone is wondering the guide is in place and the cable is properly routed. does anyone else have any theories?

thanks again for any and all replies.

If you get a chance, post a picture. Sometimes a few extra sets of eyes on the problem is helpful.

I figured it out. After reading every tech article and everything and anything to do with brakes here on the ranger station and I figured it out. As I suspected I am just dumb. Turns out the adjuster cable guide flange was not properly seated in the hole on the rear brake shoe causing slack in the adjuster cable and not allowing the adjuster arm to properly engage the star wheel. This place is awesome and thanks to everyone who has posted both their problems and solutions,

thanks again,

Morgan
