My Haynes says I need to pull the exhaust pipe below it, but IIRC from my many hours underneath the damn thing it's only an inch or 2, almost right under the joint. After I disconnect all the other stuff, and drop the xmember (with supports and such for the trans and tcase, which will come off first), couldn't I just pull the trans back a few inches on the jack (rather, move the whole jack) and then its free and clear?

I would put money on it that I'd never get that exhaust off without having to put a whole new exhaust system on... 20 years of dirt, rust, and heat? Not happening...

This has been covered many times in many threads.

Some people say yes, some say no. I've dropped almost every different Ranger trans without dropping the y-pipe. Its not easy and you have to fight and twist it to get it out, but I feel thats better then drilling out the broken exhaust bolts.

If you use copious amounts of spray lube for a day or 30 (buy the case, not the can) before and then be very careful, you will not break the bolts off.

It has been a few years since I pulled the transmission from a 4.0; but IIRC the bellhousing will hit the firewall before you get enough clearance.

Yep, exhaust bolts were stuck when I did the sploder's clutch, eventually I weaseled the transmission sideways just right to squeeze it out, bent over the lip on the firewall as much as I could so it would go in easier, still wasn't easy...

I dropped the y pipe, made it much easier. It would be worth the trouble in the end.

Several users have found it easier to loosen the driver's side body mounts
and completely unthread the passenger side body mounts and jack the body off the frame to gain the necissary clearance.

I have a 1" lift radius arm crossmember and a 1" body lift and don't need to do sh!t
to get the trans out with a stock Y-pipe.... but with Borla Headers it was necissary to
remove the crossover pipe to drop the trans.

FWIW I've done probably a dozen RBV trannys and never dropped the Y-pipe.
