Dropped valve

So I am curious what would cause and engine to drop a valve? This happened in a previous engine I had in my truck and I'm just looking for some thoughts, as I am curious if I could've prevented it.

I don't abuse the motor, I do do a bit if spirited driving though.

Usually a valve spring breaks then the keepers fall out and the valve drops.
