Drivetrain problems

I've got a 86 bronco II that broke down when the fuel pump went out. I towed it to the shop with the transmission in neutral. After the shop replaced the pump, my bronco wouldn't go in reverse. When I picked it up it wouldn't move at all.
What is the problem?
Was towing it by myself a mistake?

The factory recommends against towing faster than 40 MPH or more than 50 miles UNLESS the transfer case is in neutral or the rear driveshaft is removed. If you break those rules, you spin the transmission without lubrication.

Though it would be a good idea to tell us at least whether it's an automatic or manual.

Then your transmission oil pump wasn't turning while you were towing. Big problem.

On a 4WD, it's a good idea to tow it on a flatbed, or remove the rear driveshaft and tow by the front wheels. If you have a transfer case with a neutral position, that's good enough as long as the transmission is in "park" (or in gear for a manual). You'll find that quite a lot of tow truck drivers will insist on using a flatbed for just this reason.
